Is Reverse Osmosis Water Alkaline?

Reverse osmosis (RO) water filtration systems remove up to  99% of all the substances in water, which leaves nearly pure water which is close to or at a neutral pH of 7. But once it’s exposed to air, RO water doesn’t stay at a neutral pH for very long, it drops down to an acidic pH range of 5 - 5.5. How come? RO water is nearly pure water, and pure water is very “hungry” it will dissolve and absorb whatever it touches. The reason that exposure to the air causes the pH of RO water to drop is that RO water absorbs CO2 directly from the air

CO2 makes acidic water

All across the planet, oceans, lakes, rivers and streams are being acidified by CO2 from the air. Scientists have tracked this phenomena for decades, and they warn that it threatens our global food supply. When water absorbs CO2 from the air, it forms carbonic acid. Here’s the chemical reaction: H20 + CO2 = H2CO3. The more pure the source of water is, the more CO2 it can absorb, and the more acidic it will get. Reverse osmosis and distillation both produce nearly pure water, so both forms of water will readily turn acidic when exposed to air.

What makes alkaline water alkaline

Pure water has a neutral pH of 7, to raise or lower the pH of water you

have to add something to it. Water in nature is never pure, it always has some substances dissolved in it. Those substances are what causes the pH of water to be higher or lower than 7. In tap water, the primary dissolved substances in it are mineral salts: Calcium bicarbonate and magnesium bicarbonate. These mineral salts raise the pH of water, which is why nearly all tap water is slightly alkaline.

But alkaline water has a higher pH than tap water. The reason for this is that water ionizers change the composition of the mineral salts in tap water. The calcium and magnesium bicarbonate in tap water is changed into calcium and magnesium hydroxide. This change makes those mineral salts a lot more alkaline. Another thing that changing the mineral bicarbonates to mineral hydroxides does is turn the water into an antioxidant. The hydroxide part of the mineral hydroxides in water provide a hydroxyl ion to the water, which is a powerful antioxidant. Compare RO water to tap water and to alkaline water in the table below:

The mineral hydroxides in alkaline water are what makes it better for your health than plain water. The hydroxyl ions in alkaline water act as an antioxidant, they help protect tissues and DNA from the oxidative damage associated with poor health. The alkalinity of the water helps the body neutralize acids, and alkaline water is also easier to absorb. They give alkaline water it’s healthy qualities.

Can Reverse Osmosis water be made alkaline?

Yes. There are two steps to turning RO water into alkaline water.

First, you have to replace the minerals that reverse osmosis took out. This is done with a remineralization cartridge. The cartridge replaces the calcium and magnesium bicarbonate that reverse osmosis takes out. Good remineralization cartridges will also supply trace minerals that are also good for your health.

Second, you then need to run that remineralized water through a water ionizer. The ionizer will change the mineral bicarbonates supplied by your remineralizing cartridge into mineral hydroxides.

Why you can’t just remineralize your water into alkaline water

You may be wondering why you can’t just buy a remineralizing cartridge that already contains mineral hydroxides. The problem is that mineral hydroxides are very reactive to air, upon exposure to the air, mineral hydroxides are rapidly converted to mineral bicarbonates. This is also the reason why if you make alkaline water, you need to store it in a sealed container. The CO2 in air acidifies mineral hydroxides, and the oxygen in air oxidizes them, so the healthy properties of the mineral hydroxides are quickly lost.

Would this explain why the PH rises when the RO water from the LFS increases when the water is stored in a sealed container for 2 days?
