Want to take the hassle out of finding the right water ionizer? Let Water Ionizer Expert take care of it for you. Our team has over 20 years combined experience testing all brands and types of water ionizers. Our testing is more than just a quick review: We test each machine we review for months at a time, unless a machine fails so bad that it’s not worth it to keep testing it. Our goal is always the same: Would we want to own this machine? How does it measure up to other machines? So our testing is long-term, and under real-world conditions. Here’s our 10 point inspection that every water ionizer that we test goes through.
1 - Test pH performance and ORP readings over long periods of time.
The pH and ORP readings a water ionizer gives will change over time because hard water deposits can build up on the machine’s plates. High quality machines will have ionization chambers designed to handle these deposits, and advanced cleaning technology to minimize them. But we’ve seen plenty of poorly designed machines that clog up quickly, so their pH and ORP performance drops off rapidly. This isn’t something you can test in a video. We run the machines we test for at least 2 to 4 months to see how real world use and the passage of time affect the pH and ORP performance of a water ionizer.
Benefit to you: We make sure that the water ionizers we test can reach the pH and ORP levels you need for good health. Then we keep testing those machines to make sure they can maintain good performance over the long run.
2 - Analyze water filtration capabilities
There are over 10,000 known toxins that could be lurking in your water supply. Do you know what toxins have been reported to be in your tap water? We do! Water Ionizer Expert analyzes your local water quality report, which is filed annually by your local water authority with the EPA. That report tells us which toxins have been found in your water. We then use that information to customize your ionizers filtration system so that the filters in your machine address the toxins found in your local water supply. One-size-fits-all filters won't protect you from today’s increasingly toxic water supplies, so we make sure that the ionizer you buy has the right filters for your water ionizer.
Benefit to you: We make sure your water ionizer’s filters are configured to address the toxins in your water so you are protected from them
3 - Deconstruct the unit to inspect quality of components
One of the first things we do when we receive a new ionizer for testing is take it apart. We inspect all the components in it to make sure they’re lead-free. This is important because some cheap ionizers, mostly from China, do use lead. We also check to see what kind of plastics are used, we make sure that any water ionizer that Water Ionizer Expert carries uses 100% BPA free plastics.
We cut the filters open to see if the manufacturer has hidden any chemicals in their filters to artificially boost the performance of their machine. Ionizers such as the Aqua Ionizer Deluxe (Air, Water Company) use hidden chemicals in their filters to boost their performance. Some of these chemicals can cause kidney stones.
Benefit to you: We make sure that there are no toxic materials or hidden chemicals used in your ionizer that could endanger your health.
4 - Full support for InstallationSome water ionizer companies don't provide support, or only provide minimal support for customers who are installing their ionizer. Water Ionizer Expert only carries brands that offer full support, including a technical support team that is available at least 5 days per week to help customers and plumbers who have questions about installing their ionizer.
5 - Evaluate user experience with in home trials
Once we’re sure an ionizer is safe to use, and that it gives good pH and ORP readings, we take it home with us. The best way to find out if an ionizer is going to perform well in real world conditions is to actually use it in the real world. We want to find out how well does the machine hold up over the long term:
- Does it fill pots, pans, and large bottles fast enough?
- How well does the self cleaning function work?
- Do the pH and ORP readings remain constant over long term use?
- Is it easy for friends and family to use?
- Does it look nice in the kitchen?
Ease of use: If somebody comes in “off the street” can they easily understand how to use the machine? Can kids understand how to work the machine? We’re experts, so we like if people that are not experts can easily understand how to use the machine
How fast it fills containers: One thing we really don’t like is having to stand in front of the kitchen sink for a long time waiting for a container to fill. So we use our test machines to fill big containers like large pots and pans.
Self cleaning: Water ionizers are prone to hard water deposits, because of this, all ionizers have a self cleaning function. Some ionizers clean themselves better than others. We run an ionizer in our own kitchens for months at a time to find out how well the machines’ self cleaning function works. We expect a machine to be able to maintain its pH and ORP performance, and to maintain its flow rate.
pH and ORP: If hard water deposits coat the plates of an ionizer, the machine’s pH and ORP levels will fall off. We check our test machine’s pH and ORP readings regularly as we’re using them to see how well the machines are maintaining their pH and ORP levels.
Looks: We like ionizers that compliment our kitchens, and that don’t take up too much space on the counter. Over the course of our testing, we’ll pass a test machine around amongst ourselves to see how it looks in a variety of kitchens. This way, we can be confidant that an ionizer is going to look as nice in your kitchen as it does in ours.
Benefit to you: We make sure that the ionizer you buy will give you good performance, and be easy to use and maintain.
6 - Maintain the water ionizer for optimal understanding of upkeep
We follow the recommended maintenance for our test machines to the letter. We’re looking for two things:
- How easy is it to maintain?
- Does following the maintenance plan actually keep the machine working well?
Ease of maintenance: How would you like to have to disassemble and manually clean your ionizer every six weeks? Not much? We don’t like that either. It’s one of the reasons none of us own a Kangen machine. You do have to disassemble and clean it every six weeks. We look for machines that take minimal effort to maintain, and we expect that maintenance to be easy to do, so that you can do it yourself.
Is the maintenance effective: Some ionizers are hard to maintain, and if you don’t do the work right, then the machine may work poorly or not at all. We test our machines before and after maintenance to see that the maintenance is actually keeping the machine working well.
Benefit to you: We make sure it will be easy for you to keep your ionizer working great with minimal effort.
7 - Scrutinize warranties, return policies and user manuals
We read the fine print so you don’t have to! Warranties and return policies can be filled with hard-to-understand fine print. So we read all that fine print to make sure that the ionizer company isn’t hiding anything in it. We check out their return policy to make sure it’s hassle-free and that you get a fair shake if you want to return the unit. We also read the owner’s manual. We make sure it’s easy to understand.
Benefit to you: We make sure there are no unwelcome surprises after you buy your ionizer.
8 - Investigate customer service and technical assistance
When we’re testing an ionizer, we call both the customer service and tech support of the company that made the ionizer to ask questions and seek assistance. We want to find out:
- How easy is it to contact customer service and tech support
- Are the staff patient and helpful?
- Is the staff knowledgeable?
Contacting customer and tech support. We find out if it’s easy to get ahold of a person when you need to, and we ask tough questions. Our goal is to find out if customer service and tech support at the company are: Patient, knowledgeable, and helpful. We pretend to be a “worst case scenario” customer; someone who is having difficulty and needs help.
The staff: We want to find out if the person we’re connected to can help us, as opposed to getting put on hold and getting passed around from department to department. We expect a company to staff their phones with people that can help, not people who pass the buck. We look to see if the customer service representative or tech support staff take a genuine interest in our situation.
Benefit to you: We make sure that the company you buy your ionizer from has excellent customer service.
9 - Compare to the myriad of other water ionizers tested
How do you know which ionizer is right for you? There’s lots of things to compare, so we do it for you! We’ve tested all the major brands. We check out the cheap ionizers to find out if they really are a good deal. We have many years of experience in matching up our customers with the perfect ionizer - and we find them the best deal. So if you don’t want to spend hours trying to figure out which machine is the best, let us do it.
Benefit to you: You will get the best machine for your needs, lifestyle, and budget, without having to spend hours comparing ionizers. We’ll make sure you can buy with confidence.
10 - Taste the water!
Lastly, we make sure that the alkaline water made by the machine you buy will taste great. Ionized alkaline water should taste sweeter, and feel more refreshing than regular water. We make sure that the machine you buy is going to deliver the best tasting water you ever drank we guarantee it.
Benefit to you: You’re going to get the best tasting water you’ve ever drank, and it will be great for your health.
